Youths, former agitators, and other Niger Delta organisations have received praise from the Pan Niger Delta Forum for their nonviolent demeanour throughout the countrywide demonstration against poor government.
However, the forum urged the several groups to call off the demonstration, stating that their opinions had been heard.
The call was made by PANDEF’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Robinson, in a statement addressed to reporters on Saturday and released in Port Harcourt.
According to Robinson, there have been instances of looting and damage to life and property in several regions of the nation, prompting calls for them to end the protest.
He voiced his dismay that lawless people and other criminal elements would take advantage of the circumstances to take control of the protest and destabilise the area.
“The Niger Delta people, especially leaders of ethnic youth organisations, community-based and civil society groups, as well as activists, former agitators, and youths in general, are to be commended by the Pan Niger Delta Forum leadership for preserving peace in the Niger Delta region despite the nationwide protests,” the statement said.
“PANDEF urges the protesters in some states of the region to end their protests in order to prevent criminal elements from hijacking the process and causing disruptions to the relative peace in the region, given reports of looting, destruction, and fatalities in some parts of the country.”
It’s crucial to remember that the argument has already been stated. We’ve heard you speak. We demand that all tiers of government act quickly and decisively to address the issues that the people are confronting.
