In the midst of continuous protests throughout Nigeria on Sunday, August 4, 2024, President Bola Tinubu gave a speech to the people.
The nationwide demonstrations were started on Thursday, August 1, in reaction to the suffering that the people of the nation were going through.
Security personnel are said to have murdered no fewer than 17 persons and detained numerous demonstrators nationwide.
“We don’t want bad government,” the demonstrators in Kano screamed in Hausa as images and videos of them carrying the Russian flag went viral on Saturday.
Condolences and Call for Peace: The President called for a stop to violence and expressed regret for the lives lost during the protests. “I offer my condolences to the families and loved ones of those lost during the protests. “More bloodshed, violence, and destruction must end,” Tinubu declared.
Suspension of Protests: Tinubu asked demonstrators to put an end to their current protests and have talks instead. “I hereby urge protestors and the organisers to pause any further protest and make space for dialogue,” he declared.
Economic Reforms: In order to “reverse the decades of economic mismanagement,” the President justified his decision to eliminate fuel subsidies and restructure the foreign exchange system.
Financial Enhancements: “Aggregate government revenues have more than doubled, hitting over N9.1 trillion in the first half of 2024 compared to the first half of 2023,” said Tinubu, highlighting economic improvement.
Infrastructure Development: The President spoke about current, significant infrastructure projects, including as the Sokoto-Badagry Highway and the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway.
Oil and Gas Sector Revival: According to Tinubu, investment interest in the oil industry has revived as output of 1.61 million barrels per day has increased.
Compressed Natural Gas effort: A million conversion kits will be distributed as part of the government’s CNG effort, which was started to power vehicles and cut expenses.
Youth Empowerment Programs: Tinubu announced a number of programs aimed at empowering young people, such as the student loan program, the Digital and Creative Enterprises program, and many skill-building projects.
Housing Projects: As part of the Renewed Hope City and Estate effort, the President announced plans to finish building 100,000 housing units over the following three years.
Measures for Ensuring Food Security: Tinubu unveiled intentions to increase food production, which include distributing farming equipment and removing levies on specific food items.
“Let us work together to build a brighter future for ourselves and for generations to come,” the President said in closing, calling for patience and unity. Let’s choose growth over stagnation, togetherness over separation, and hope over fear.
