Naja’atu Salisu, a female student at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University in Bauchi, has been formally declared deceased following her collapse in the lavatory.
The computer science 300-level student passed away on Friday after her sister discovered her unconscious in the lavatory.
Telling Arewa PUNCH that “she had done every routine preparation for the morning class before going into the bathroom,” her flatmate begged to remain anonymous.
“Naja’atu has arranged her outfits by the side of her bed for the class.”
Our correspondent learnt that “Naja’atu, after bringing out her study materials in the morning entered the bathroom to shower while her sister waited for her so that they could both attend lecture together” from Zailani Bappa, the university’s director of information and public relations.
“She was found unconscious on the bathroom floor in the female hostel at the Gubi campus of the university,” said her sister, who had followed up to check on her after noticing her unusually extended stay in the restroom.
Zailani claimed that although she was sent to the university clinic for a blood transfusion after her sister raised the alarm, the medical staff was unable to locate a vein in her body.
He continued, “This is when the clinic staff realised that the situation was serious and rushed her to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, where medical professionals certified her dead.”
According to Bappa, “Naja’atu’s parents, who live in Abuja, accepted the development and directed that a funeral prayer and burial be accorded her according to Islamic rites after being notified of the situation.”
He went on to say that Naja’atu was buried in accordance with Islamic customs.
Along with other student unions, clubs, and social groups, the leadership of SUG ATBU Bauchi, the Students Union Government, has sent a number of condolence notes to the parents of the deceased as well as the school administration, calling the incident “unfortunate.”
