According to Paris police, a man was arrested on Sunday for climbing the Eiffel Tower just hours before the Olympics’ closing ceremony.
The man was spotted climbing the tower around 14:45 local time (13:45 BST), and cops quickly intervened and apprehended him, police added. There were no other facts about the man’s motivation or nationality available at this time.
Social media videos show a shirtless guy mounting the tower, right above the Olympic rings that ornamented it during the summer games.
Another video shows the man being led away by police, hands cuffed behind his back, and saying to a spectator, “Bloody warm, innit?”
According to the Associated Press, French police evacuated the area surrounding the Eiffel Tower during the incident, and CNN also claimed that the tower had been evacuated, citing police.
The BBC has been unable to independently confirm any evacuations or whether they were still in effect at 16:00.
The Eiffel Tower was the spectacular finale of the Olympics opening ceremony, but it is not anticipated to appear in the closing ceremony on Sunday.
