Separately, the Senate and the House of Representatives have moved up their respective dates of return from the current extended holiday to September 24, a one-week extension.
The revised date of resumption was announced by the Senate Clerk, Chinedu Akubueze, in a message to the Senators in the Red Chamber.
After a two-month break, the senators were scheduled to return to plenary on Tuesday, September 17.
The memo said, “Dear Honourable Senators, I hope this memo finds you in good health. We would like to notify you that the current break will resume on Tuesday, September 24, 2024 at 11:00 am instead of Tuesday, September 17, 2024.
In addition, the House of Representatives has added an extra week to its yearly break before reconvening. The Green Chamber was supposed to meet again on September 17, but it was postponed until September 24 due to a one-week delay.
The decision to extend the break was made in response to an internal communication that the Clerk of the House shared with the members, according to a statement from its spokesperson, Hon. Akin Rotimi.
“The House of Representatives is scheduled to reconvene on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, at 11:00 am following its yearly break,” the speaker declared.
“This comes after the House Leadership directed a postponement from the original date of September 17, 2024, which was announced to Honourable Members on Wednesday through an internal document sent by the Clerk of the House, Dr. Yahaya Danzaria.
“In compliance with the roles outlined in the 1999 Constitution (As Amended) and the House Standing Orders, Honourable Members engaged in extensive constituency outreach across the nation during the recess, addressing critical issues of concern to constituents and strengthening oversight of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).”
“On Wednesday, September 25, 2024, upon reconvening, the House leadership will install the new members of the Joint Senate/House Ad Hoc Committees on the Petroleum Industry Investigation and the Public Complaints Commission (PCC) board.”
Rotimi said that on the day of resumption, more information about these actions would be disclosed in plenary.
