Perth residents at the Claremont Showground mass vaccination centre steered clear of AstraZeneca on Tuesday, despite Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s announcement that the jab can now be requested by anyone under 40.
Hundreds queued in snaking lines for Pfizer, with people wanting the AstraZeneca jab told to skip straight to the front of the line.
A vaccination clinic worker walking through the crowds while continuously calling out “anyone taking AstraZeneca?” found no participants to jump the queue while The West Australian was there.
“Anyone taking AstraZeneca, please come forward,” another yelled out as the lines at Claremont remained unmoved.
AstraZeneca had been earmarked for Australians over the age of 60, following rare blood clotting disorders linked to the vaccine in younger inoculated people.
Premier Mark McGowan this morning said he believed making Pfizer available to over 60s and a massive advertising campaign to fill vaccine appointments were WA’s paths out of future lockdowns.
It comes as Perth and Peel were plunged into a lockdown at midnight after a third COVID case was identified in the metropolitan area’s north.
