President Bola Tinubu will not attend this year’s 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Instead, Vice President Kashim Shettima will lead Nigeria’s delegation to the annual summit next week.
According to a statement released on Thursday by Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President has authorised Vice President Kashim Shettima to lead Nigeria’s delegation.
According to the announcement, President Tinubu, who returned to the country last Sunday after visiting China and the United Kingdom, intends to focus on local matters and solve some of the country’s challenges, particularly in light of the recent terrible flooding.
At UNGA 79, Shettima will present Nigeria’s national speech to the General Assembly, attend significant sideline events, and have bilateral meetings.
The high-level General Debate, with the topic “Leaving no one behind: Acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development, and human dignity for present and future generations,” will take place from Tuesday, September 24 to Saturday, September 28 in 2024.
